Colombia-born artist and designer Jaime Patino-Calvo works and lives in Brooklyn.


My painting practice explores the concept of belonging from an immigrant point of view. From this starting point, two poles pull at this central thesis: Belonging and the lack of it. As an immigrant, you feel far away from the cultural influences that create a sense of foundation and home. You then find yourself borrowing a new identity when moving to a new place. This tension between multiple selves is where I see the inspiration for the concepts that inform my work.

My work is a vibrant, dense, and ever-evolving canvas. The compositions strike a delicate balance between abstraction and figuration, creating a palpable tension. This tension, a dance between the tangible and the abstract, lends the pieces an unconfined, active quality. They seem to constantly break free from their original form, transforming into something new. This metamorphosis gives rise to a rhythm and linearity that traverses the canvas, engaging the viewer's gaze and serving as a guiding force.

The tension I'm cultivating, both conceptually and aesthetically, is not just an element of my work, but a force that draws me in. It's this very energy that fosters an intimate connection between me, my work, and the new sense of belonging I'm striving to unearth and convey.
